The booziest, best, most creative craft cocktails are being made right here in the Bishop Arts District—here’s where to find them!

Botanist Bar Bishop Arts Restaurant

1. Botanist: With a new Beverage Director—LA transplant Iluggy Recinos, previously of NoMad LA and Bestia—at the helm, this sexy lounge-like living room has soared to the top of our list of places to get a good drink. Recinos is slinging beautifully creative cocktails like a perfectly clear “Espresso Martini” made with coffee infused vodka, and mezcal-based concoctions that balance the smoky agave-based alcohol with a touch of spice and sweetness that will turn any tequila drinker into a diehard fan. 308 N Bishop Ave.

Tejas Bar Bishop Arts Restaurant

2. Tejas: This newly reopened Tex-Mex restaurant and bar is also owned by Botanist proprietors Exxir Hospitality, so the cocktail program was also designed by Beverage Director Iluggy Recinos. Think the same creativity as Botanist, with a distinctly Tex-Mex flair. And while the frozen Palomas are an obvious (and delicious) crowd pleaser, we’d recommend sidling up to the bar and ordering up a tequila-based cocktail like the Tex Mex Railway, made with tamarind, ancho chili, minted pimms and habanero. 250 N Bishop Ave.

Wild Detectives Bar Bishop Arts Restaurant

3. Wild Detectives: Where else in Dallas can you find a good book and great booze in the same room? This independent bookstore has programmed over 300 literary and cultural events and probably sold twice as many books and cocktails since opening, and it’s still our favorite spot to catch a reading, live show or screaming while enjoying a classic Negroni. 314W Eighth St.

Bishop Arts Neighborhood Taco T Vino

4. Taco Y Vino: There is nowhere else you should be spending Taco Tuesdays than at this taco and wine bar. Every Tuesday this casual-meets-upscale spot hosts Loteria, or Mexican Bingo, with the every vivacious caller Brian, who seamlessly switches up the music while making quick-on-his-feet quips during each call. People will shout, enthusiastically participate in dance-offs to break a tie, and the tacos are as good as the wine. 213 W Eighth St.

La Reunion Bar Bishop Arts Restaurant

5. La Reunion: Our favorite coffee and tea shop by day…and our favorite coffee, tea and cocktail spot by night! While caffeine aficionado and owner Mike Mettendorf has perfected the espresso-based morning sip, he’s also created a great laid back atmosphere to enjoy a drink. And you should obviously try a warm boozy one like the Hot Toddy, made with the best chamomile tea and whiskey, or an “Everything Nicer” with hot coffee, bourbon, pecan and nutmeg. 229 N Bishop Ave.

Dallas Best Kept Secret | The Bishop Arts District

From Uptown and Greenville Avenue to Knox-Henderson and Deep Ellum, Dallas has no shortage of great places to live. That said, there’s no question in our mind that Bishop Arts is poised to become #1 on the Dallas neighborhoods ‘Top Ten’ list. If the current construction boom in north Oak Cliff is any indication, it looks like it’ll be a front-runner for years to come.

Called the “Bishop Arts District” due to the concentration of artists who set up studios in the 1970’s, Bishop Arts is the hidden gem of Dallas — a distinct community area with the feel of a small town and the flair of an artist’s colony that until now has flown under the radar. But not anymore; the word is out. Read on to find our five favorite reasons to call the Bishop Arts District—and the Bishop Highline—home.

#1 Art is everywhere

If a vibrant social and cultural scene is important to you, look no further. You’ve found your new home. From the Bathgirl mural commemorating one-time Oak Cliff resident Yvonne Craig to the trolley mural paying homage to the neighborhood’s historic roots, art is on most (if not every) street corner.

There are also several performing arts centers in the Bishop Arts District. Some of the hottest bands touring perform at the Kessler Theater, as well as up and coming indie bands waiting to be discovered.

Bishop Arts is also home to the Texas Theatre, which, in addition to housing a Prohibition style bar, shows films ranging from classics to indies. Whether you’re craving dinner and a movie or dinner and a show, the entertainment and nightlife options you’ll find in Bishop Arts can’t be mass produced.

Our murals and shows are pretty awesome. But they aren’t the only art in town. There’s art in the house-made charcuterie at Boulevardier.

There’s art in the unusual flavor profiles at Bishop Cider Co. And there’s art in every one of Chef Katherine’s creations at Dude, Sweet Chocolate.

Here, art is everywhere you look, including your future home. From our exterior wall murals painted by #blindartist John Bramblitt, to the design of our apartments themselves, art is in our DNA. That’s why one of the amenities we’re most excited to bring you is the neighborhood’s first ever live theater.

Bishop Highline is currently in discussions with several community theaters about managing and operating this venue, which will be housed in the basement of our apartment community at 120 North Madison, set to open in 2019/2020.

#2 Independent through and through

The mix of restaurants, cafes, wine bars, boutiques, art galleries and coffee shops in the Bishop Arts District is unparalleled. Talk about a retail smorgasbord—within four blocks, residents can choose from Italian, Latin American, French, Japanese, Vietnamese or Cuban cuisine not to mention good old-fashioned Texas BBQ.

To be clear, when we say “Italian” we’re not talking about the Olive Garden. The Bishop Arts District is one of Dallas’ most independent neighborhoods.

The award-winning restaurants and shops that line our streets aren’t part of a chain, they are run by the owners themselves. Don’t be surprised if the chef comes to your table to check on your meal.

When you live in Bishop Arts, every day is a Taste of Oak Cliff. With the Bishop Highline as your home, it’s easy to be the first in line for Sunday brunch at Oddfellows, dinner at Hattie’s or happy hour at Ten Bells Tavern.

You’ll still need a reservation to sample the handmade pasta and house-cured salami at Lucia’s, but that’s to be expected for a restaurant that’s won the James Beard award five times in a row.

Not to be discounted, the neighborhood’s more casual eateries really hit the spot when time and money are at a premium. The walk up tacos and yucca fries at the unassuming C Senor and creative combinations at Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. grilled never disappoint.

Even the shopping in Bishop Arts is one-of-a-kind. When you live here, you’ll never again find yourself at a loss when you need to buy a special gift for a loved one. For flowers, you won’t find a bouquet more artistically arranged, exquisitely packaged and expertly delivered than those at Dirt.

For for birthdays, weddings, anniversary gifts or other special occasions, Neighborhood has your back with its selection of unique and handmade goods.

While you’re there, don’t forget to check out their 56 Foot Wall Gallery featuring a new artist every month. Holiday shopping? Done. Emporium Pies delivers. All you need to do is match your favorite friend or family member with your favorite pie… of the day.

#3 “I’d rather drive,” said no one ever

If you’ve ever felt like you’re passing your life away behind a windshield, we’ve got good news. Bishop Arts District is one of few neighborhoods in Dallas where cars truly are optional.

Just ten minutes south of downtown, Bishop Arts makes commuting to major Dallas employers like Methodist Dallas Medical Center or AT&T a breeze.

No one’s location is more central than ours, and although parking is available to Highline residents, with the Dallas Street Car just blocks away, it’s worth considering whether owning a car makes sense.

Think about all the fabulous trips you could take with the money you’ll save on gas and maintenance. Bali anyone? Plus who couldn’t use the extra downtime to read a book, listen to a podcast or catch up on Instagram.

With untold miles of bike lanes and paths, it’s no surprise that Bishop Arts scored a 90 on the walkability scale. The Bishop Arts District is one of Dallas’ most pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, so when you want to explore at home it’s easy to do—either on foot, by bike, or with the Bishop Highline’s free ride-sharing service.

Available to all Bishop Highline residents, our driver will take you anywhere you want to go within Bishop Arts or Oak Cliff. Whether you want to do a little shopping, meet friends for an after work happy hour or get dropped off at the gym (we won’t judge), you’ve got options. If you want to venture further there’s always Uber and Lyft.

#4 Be part of a true community

If you were born after 1997 you might be asking yourself, ‘community—what’s that?’ Something of an endangered species in today’s world, a community is a place where people know their neighbors, stop and say hello in the streets and come together to celebrate good times.

And from Christmas in July to Mardi Gras to the Bishop Arts Crawfish Fest, there are lots of good times in Bishop Arts. Pretty much all of Dallas descends upon Bishop Arts for Bastille on Bishop, the epic street festival where we celebrate Oak Cliff’s historic “La Reunion” French Colony.

Every year on July 14th, we break out the baguettes, don our berets and say “oui oui” to more wine, crepes, mussels, mimes and more.

Outside of special occasions, we find lots of other ways to mix and mingle. Neighborhood bike rides put on by Bike Friendly Oak Cliff or wine walks organized by the Bishop Arts Merchants Association are a great way to stretch your legs among friends. Want to stretch your mind?

Head over to The Wild Detectives for a book reading or movie screening. Located right behind our building at 305 Melba, the bookstore-bar is destined to become your go-to for conversation, coffee and cocktails. For the visual arts, check the calendars at the Ginger Fox or Jen Mauldin Gallery.

Between the two there’s always an art exhibition showing. And don’t forget the community at the Bishop Highline—we’ve got some fun events planned just for residents.

#5 And now, the Bishop Highline

The Pop Artists brought art to the people. By rethinking our floor plans and getting creative with our amenities, we’re doing the same with luxury housing.

Down to the unique design and material of the very last window, our modern studio and one bedroom apartments at 305 and 431 Melba are a study in composition.

Our pet-friendly residences features natural designer lights, framed mirrors, high-end finishes, cherry cabinets, and fold-away wall beds, quite literally are four rooms in one.

It took coordination across many disciplines to design a studio apartment that adapts to different uses, but we succeeded.

Come take a tour to see how easy it is to transform your bedroom into a place you can entertain friends or use as a home office or studio.

All Bishop apartments come standard with quality appliances, in-unit washer/dryers, and quart counter-tops.  You’ll find no pet restrictions here. And amenities, let’s talk amenities.

The amenities at Bishop Highline are ones you won’t find anywhere else.

To start, there’s the aforementioned free ride-sharing service serving Bishop Arts and Oak Cliff. Coming soon, our rooftop deck boasts some of the best views of Dallas.

Also in the works is a plan to launch a food truck program in our parking lot. Who would you like to invite for lunch—Nosh Box EateryRuthie’s Rolling Café? Send us your votes!

Come find out what makes the Bishop Highline as unique as Bishop Arts itself.

A perfect resting spot for the husband-in-tow, The Wild Detectives is described best by its purveyors: “Our bookstore-bar-venue is the result of 10 years of friendship of two Spanish civil engineers, Javier García del Moral and Paco Vique. They always wished for a space that could mix two of their passions: books and booze.” Enough said.

Already looking fine but still looking for fun? Peruse some one-of-a-kind art at Mercado369 or the Ellison Valencia Gallery, smoke an artsy cigar from Cigar Art, or shoot some pool while listening to the jukebox at Oak Cliff Social Club. There’s a little something for everyone.

You may be drawn in by the shops and savory sustenance, but we promise that you’ll fall in love with the Bishop Arts District’s nostalgia for a distant age. After all, this is America at its most beautiful: a tight-knit community of independent business owners — far too many to mention here — looking to do something a little different, a little more like they used to, and perhaps, even like they will again tomorrow. BLIND ARTIST PAINTED A VISUAL MASTERPIECE FOR A 4-STORY BISHOP HIGHLINE WALL

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” _builder_version=”4.4.8″ background_enable_color=”off” height_phone=”auto” max_height=”none”][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”3.25″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”3.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”]

John Bramblitt – A blind muralist that lost his eyesight during a seizure recently painted a 4 story mural on the 305 Melba location of Bishop Highline. He paints based on texture with the assistance of his wife Jacqui and Guide Dog, Eagle.

John Bramblitt lost his eyesight 20 years ago but that did not stop his creativity and his work. Today, he continues to work as a muralist, and as attested, a brilliant one at that. A sense of awe would overcome anyone who understands his story and witnesses the skill and beauty of his art. He is certainly one of those rare artists, who won’t let anything, not even his disability, stand in his way. His is an inspiring story.

Recently, a four-story mural on the wall of Bishop Highline was the result of Bramblitt’s talent.

The mural on Bishop Highline is his third mural project and also his largest. And with each mural, he pushes further, either in size or color. The mural portrays a woman playing the guitar, with hair blowing in the wind and blue skies in the background. It is, according to him, his best mural yet.

Bramblitt explained his preference for the bright and colorful theme of the mural; his inspiration was the Bishop Arts District itself. He thinks of Bishop Arts District as a fun and laid back place, filled with beauty, art, and music.

He currently lives in Denton. He is the author of an award-winning book (“Shouting in the Dark”), has been the subject of award-winning documentaries, has been featured in The New York Times and Psychology Today, and has appeared on several TV Channels, such as ABC, BBC, Discovery Channel. And unsurprisingly, his art has been sold in over 120 countries.

He is also a consultant for museums. Not only do his workshops allow people with disabilities to pursue art, but it also shows different ways of making art. Moreover, he is an art instructor to many visually impaired students across the USA. According to him, “Art is deeper than eyesight and I think that is just a wonderful thing.”

It was during college (University of North Texas) that Bramblitt had an epileptic seizure, which permanently damaged his optic nerve from lack of oxygen. And as a result, he lost his eyesight. He has had epilepsy since childhood and by college, his seizures had become life-threatening. After losing his sight, he became depressed. And art was his rescue bringing him peace and light.

At first, he didn’t believe he could pursue art. But with help and dedication, he learned how to be a visual artist once again, adapting to his disability at the same time. He developed a unique method to paint; which is using textured paints to feel around the canvas. Replacing the sense of sight with the sense of touch, he produces breathtaking art.

His genius is further evidenced by his method of dealing with colors; his bottles and paint tubes are labeled by braille and he uses recipes and portion measurements when mixing colors to get the right combination. To find his way around a canvas, he uses raised lines.

He also uses a method called haptic visualization, allowing him to paint see his subjects through the sense of touch. He has a preference for a special black paint as it feels slick and very different from bricks. He uses this paint to feel for the black line and then determines where to put his brush.  During his first art shows, he didn’t share his disability for fear that the viewers would see his work differently.

He later started mural projects, relishing the challenge and the rush of going beyond his limits. “Working on something big like this, it’s an emotional sort of thing.” His first large-scale mural was on a building in New York for World Sight Day.

Bishops Art is a small district located in the heart North Oak Cliff Area, in Dallas, TX. A neighborhood rich with history and memorable events, Bishop Arts is host to a number of boutiques, trendy restaurants, art galleries, coffee houses, bars, and nightclubs. For those who are searching for feelings that are invoked by small towns and close-knit communities, Bishop Arts is the place to be. It is considered to be one of the best-hidden delights and one of the most unique districts of the whole of Dallas.

Before he started on the large wall itself, Bramblitt painted the design on a simple canvas, representing how the actual mural, once done, would look. He then, with his wife, Jacqui

Serie, and his guide dog, Eagle, would get to the site with paint and lift. He was organized and broke it down to stages. He does not claim that it was easy, he often did lose his way and worried if it would work out. No doubt, his patience, and belief in his skill produced amazing results.

Bishop Highline held an event to rightfully honor John Bramblitt on 6 June 2019. During the event, Bishop Highline also presented the Guide Dogs of Texas with a $5,000 donation. The talent of Bramblitt is there for all to see on the four-story wall of The Bishop Highline.

Many would come to the conclusion that blindness is an obstacle for an artist. But that is not the case with Bramblitt, it’s, in fact, the opposite. It was his disability that inspired his art.

Bishop Highline offers Studio and one-bedroom apartments for rent. One of the most prominent and famous apartment rentals of Bishop Arts, it offers comfort and fulfilling experience.

Furthermore, living in Bishop Highline means that everything is within walking distance. Hence, you have access to trendy eateries, upscale bars, yoga classes, and gyms.
